Discussion:
DBVisit as an alternative to Oracle Golden Gate Replication.

Hello All,
Has anybody out there used DBVisit as an alternative to Oracle Golden Gate Replication.
We are thinking of replacing Oracle Golden Gate 11gR2 with DBVisit Replication due to the high licensing cost with Oracle GG.
I wanted to know if anybody has had any experience with DBVisit Replication - good or bad. Any best practices with DBVisit. I was thinking of setting up a Proof of Concept for DBVisit Replication, any pointers greatly appreciated.
At the moment we are only doing Oracle to Oracle replication, this could change in the future eg PostgreSQL.
TIA

We are also looking at DBVisit Replication. We have not jumped in yet. It
will be to do Oracle to PostgreSQL replication. DBVisit told us that
replication to PostgreSQL will be out this December. We don't use GG due to
cost. It's unfortunate Oracle doesn't license GG for temporary use. It's
the perfect product for temporary licensing (such as 30 or 60 days).

Like Ahmed, I also look for some advice on DBVisit.

This sounds familiar: http://www.oraclealchemist.com/news/replication-ace-comic/

I've enjoyed the use of DBVisit. For Oracle to Oracle it has been exceptionally easy to use, has a variety of methods for getting data replicated over (on any Oracle edition), and is a great middle ground between Streams and GG (leaning further towards GG in terms of ability and stability). Just my $0.02.

Seems to make sense to me, but I have never used it.

Are you replicating on prem or to the cloud?

If you are going cloud and AWS specifically you could use the AWS Database
Migration Service with the Schema Conversion Tool to move Oracle to Oracle
or Oracle to PostgreSQL. Its not as feature rich as GG but does a good
enough job to get your data there and kept in sync.

No license costs and you only pay for the resources you use for the
replication instance.

Michael,

Oracle do license Goldengate for temporary use, 1 year at a time minimum though. You could always cut a deal with Oracle...

DB Visit (and Shareplex and others) are very good. They are not as fast nor as sophisticated or flexible as integrated Goldengate, but they are much much cheaper. If they fit your requirements, go for it!

Regards

Neil.

A couple of years ago, I had a client that used DBVisit (Oracle SE to Oracle Se). For the most part, it worked great. We had a couple of issues with DBVisit in the first few months it was being used. DBVisit support was great to work with, and they quickly resolved the issues. After that we had no issues with the replication, it was easy to setup and monitor.

They were bought out and the new owners insisted on using EE and GG. They told me later that DBVisit was far easier to manage and they regretted being forced to use GG.

Unfortunately NDAs prevent me being any more explicit. I would not hesitate to use DBVisit again.

I've tested out shareplex and didn't care for it too much. Similar setup as GG but it there was also some issues with multiple encryption wallet files for multiple instances on the same server. Also every time there was an issue it seemed support always made us uninstall and reinstall. Unfortunately DbVisit still doesn't or didn't support as of 6 months ago database encryption replication. It was too bad cause I've meet the DbVisit guys and they are really awesome honest people. So we had to go with GG. It is still new to us and working out some issues.
I would talk to and test out both.

Slightly off topic, but we use DBVisit Standby (data guard alternative for Oracle SE). I’m very happy with the product and the support we’ve gotten from them.

Hi Zabair,

The best recommandation I can give is to test it because it's very easy to
download the trial version and test it.

First you can test it on your laptop with the #repattack lab:
https://dbvisit.atlassian.net/wiki/display/REPA11XE/RepAttack+11g+XE+Home
I've an old video about this trial setup:
http://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/c26Y6deQ0o
Then when you have seen ho to setup you can try it on your data (so that
you validate the datatypes, and other logical replications issues that may
happen) and then another test with production as source (to validate the
redo rate).
If you speak German or French, there's a free event soon in Switzerland
talking about GoldenGate, Dbvisit replicate and Attunity replicate:
http://www.dbi-services.com/news-en/replication-event-2

Regards,
Franck.

I have never used DBVisit, but some of my customers have. I haven't
heard any complaints. From what I have seen, the software is well
packaged, well documented and with good support service, which is very
important. I didn't have to pay for it, so I don't know the price.
